Good afternoon everyone. Thank you again for the continued thoughts, prayers, email, and texts. They mean so much to us and we really enjoy reading them. I was able to see Ryan for the first time yesterday around 1:00 pm. He was awake and not in too much pain. He was able to talk to me and ask questions about his surgery and was pretty excited to see the picture they took of his lung. He was moved to a room later in the afternoon and I was able to see him again. He was definitely in some pain, but still able to talk to me.
Currently he is hooked up to many medical devices and will be for 2 or 3 more days. He has one chest tube in, which is used to drain the fluid from the space where his lung used to be. It will most likely stay in for a couple more days and I believe that is what has been giving him the most pain. He has an epidural to control his pain. He is able to push a button every 10 minutes and get pain medication. He is also hooked up to a catheter, IV, and is on oxygen all the time. It’s quite a job to bring all that equipment along when he goes for a walk. And he has been able to take a couple walks! It’s so amazing to see him mobile. It takes a lot out of him, but he is a fighter and wants to get back to normal as quickly as possible.
Dr. Ravi (oncologist) stopped by this morning and said he was very happy with how well the surgery went. We know there will be some type of chemo after he has recovered, but until we get the pathology back, we won’t have an exact plan of action. The pathology results will come in about 7 days. As I was sitting with Ryan this afternoon Dr. Swisher (surgeon) came in to check on him. He was also very pleased with how well the surgery went. He said most likely the chest tube will come out later today or tomorrow. He is only able to eat ice chips and it will be like that for a few days.
I’m sitting in the room with him right now typing this and he is in so much pain. They finally got more pain medicine in him, so he seem better now and is sleeping. When the anesthetics wore off last night his pain increased significantly. It seems to come in waves. It’s so awful to see him like this. He is in very good spirits though and does so well with the pain. I’m trying to divide my time between spending time with Ryan and taking care of the boys, but it’s hard. I want to be here with Ryan all the time, but the boys need to me too.
We hope everyone is having a wonderful day and thank you again for everything you do for us! I will continue with my daily updates until Ryan is able write again.
